Clinically Proven Wavelengths vs Power – What to look for in your LED

LED phototherapy treatments (also known as light therapy) are a phenomenon both at home and in the professional salon, spa or clinic space, proven by the over 12 million results seen from one simple Google search. So understandably, it’s a topic that therapists and even doctors (not to mention consumers!) can be confused by. Too much power causes too much heat and results in damage, while too little won’t allow consistency, wasting wavelengths and energy, while providing low quality results, if any. Then there is the device itself that if not built with the ability to reduce heat (thermal dissipation) and deliver the light accurately (tolerance) there is simply no point in having the treatment. So to clear up any confusion, enter, Dermalux, the global pioneers in clinically-proven LED light therapy, who combine three clinically-proven wavelengths with the aligning power, accuracy and quality, custom diodes to deliver visible results without risk of damage.

Medical CE certified to treat psoriasis, acne, accelerate wound healing and relieve pain (along with FDA, ARTG and ISO listings), Dermalux have the credibility to clear up exactly what to look for when it comes to LED and ensure you are buying into a device and treatment that will deliver change to skin on a cellular level. Designed and manufactured in the UK, they take a three-pronged approach, covering power, precision and performance to assess effective LED. Read all about it below

Performance: Fundamentally, light therapy is using different wavelengths of light-emitting diodes (LED) to achieve different outcomes and create change in the skin. Dermalux is the only LED range of devices to deliver all three wavelengths – blue: 415nm (antibacterial), red; 633nm (cell function optimisation) and near infrared: 830nm (anti-inflammatory) – simultaneously at the optimum power for superior, lasting results. In addition, their patented, bespoke ceramic diodes allow Dermalux to deliver a more controlled and accurate wavelength that won’t overheat (or cause heat in the skin), which is critical in treating wounds and inflammatory medical skin conditions, such as psoriasis, acne and rosacea. Non-invasive, pain-free and clinically-proven, there are countless concerns that can be improved by one or all wavelengths combined, not to mention complementing other treatments to amplify results or speed up recovery.

Power: Yes it’s true that the more energy output (power), the more change you can make to the skin, however this is only to a certain, and very particular point. Beyond that you are going beyond scientific evidence and unnecessarily heating the skin and the device. Power matters, however the more power you generate, the harder it is to keep going at that power level – which is where stability and accuracy of light (precision) also comes into play. Also, heat is a necessary biproduct of higher power, so a device’s ability to offset this needs to be as efficient as possible – cue, the aforementioned thermal dissipation concept that Dermalux do so well. In comparison, competitor LED devices may offer higher power, but as it is not needed for optimum absorption, this wastes light energy, while overheating the skin and the device, leading to risk of damage to both.

Precision: Refers to the peak emission tolerance or how specific the wavelengths can be when targeting the skin cells. Dermalux LEDs are best in class with an unmatched +/- 2nm peak emission tolerance. This ensures targeted energy is accurate, delivering light to the chromophore with optimum absorption, stabilised for the length of the treatment (key in making change in the skin). In comparison, competitor LED devices have a peak emission tolerance ranging up to +/- 50nm which means much of the light energy is wasted, and unstable, adding risk of damaging skin outside of the targeted area of concern.

So if you’re in the market for buying, or trying LED, make sure you check for clinically-proven wavelengths and clinically-proven power, along with quality diodes, thermal dissipation technology and the precision (peak emission tolerance) to consistently target and treat skin concerns in a stable manner from start to finish.

Congratulations to Michaela Johnson and her staff member, kicking goals in the salon industry right now. A true representation of the brand, this clinic is solely based around Dermalux LED, with every treatment and service offering LED as an add on, or pre-treatment prep regardless of the size of the service.

Featuring an enticing LED lounge that boasts two Dermalux Compact Lite devices, along with a Dermalux Flex that is moved between treatment rooms to amplify results, so successful, that in the last year alone they have doubled their revenue! Also soaring in the social media space, this winning salon showcases how incredible their services are through consistent posts, reels and stories.

Michaela says, “The customisation is mind-blowing. We love how we are able to customise the lights and times etc for what we are treating. Our LEDs have been a great support when we are busy in the treatment rooms and unable to fit someone in with a therapist for a couple of weeks, so we use the LED light lounge as part of their treatment plan. We have recently done this with a client concerned with post inflammatory hyperpigmentation acne scaring and visible results were noticed within two sessions. We have also supported a psoriasis client with life-changing results.

Congratulations to the deserving winners of the Dermalux Stockist of the Year 2024 – The Skin Bar & Lounge.

LED Red Light Therapy for Complete Skin Rejuvenation & Anti-Ageing Benefits

How Effective is Red Light Therapy?

Since the early 1990s red light therapy has been widely used, with scientists first using it to stimulate plant growth in space as the LEDs worked to promote the photosynthesis of plant cells. Fast forward to today, red light therapy is one of the most sought after skin therapy treatments, a trend that does appear to be in decline.

Red light therapy is proven to be effective at treating a multitude of skin concerns from fine lines & wrinkles, dehydrated skin, redness & irritation, enlarged pores and dull, tired skin. Providing light is delivered into the skin at the clinically proven wavelength (633nm), and at the optimised intensity and dose enabling effective photobiomodulation of targeted cells and skin tissue for results.

The first of our three clinically proven lights is Red (633nm) Light.

So, how does Red Light work?

In short, the Red Light wavelength (633n) targets the Dermis layer of the skin to address conditions and concerns such as fine lines & wrinkles, dehydrated skin, redness & irritation, enlarged pores & dull, tired skin.

To go a little deeper, each skin cell has a ‘powerhouse’ called the Mitochondria & the reason it’s called the powerhouse is thanks to its ability to make up the majority of the cell’s energy source. This cell energy is called ‘ATP’ (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule in which is essential for cell function, regeneration and repair. As our ATP levels decline with age, the Red Light works to give this molecule a much-needed boost.

What does Red LED Light do?
Ever wondered if red LED light really works?

Rejuvenating Red Light accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother, firmer skin. Exposure to Red light at 633nm is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy (ATP) which in turn “kick starts” cells to regenerate faster.

Red light is potently absorbed by fibroblasts increasing collagen and elastin synthesis and boosting natural hydration levels. It also improves blood flow for increased tissue oxygenation and the lymphatic systems to eliminate toxins. Red light offers immediate visible results; skin feels hydrated and plump and radiance is restored.

What does Red Light do for skin?

Red Light (630nm) has many benefits, including;

  • Boost’s collagen and elastin production
  • Improves complexion, texture and tone
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Increases skin hydration
  • Evens skin tone and texture
  • Shrinks enlarged pores
  • Revitalises and restores radiance

Is Red Light bad for you?

Used at the correct precision, such as our clinically-proven 633nm wavelength, red light will cause no harm or damage to the skin. Unlike UV light coming from the sun, Red Light therapy is a completely natural process and there is minimal to no risk of side effects if the proper treatment protocol is followed.

Why the Delivery & Accuracy of Wavelengths Matters

Whilst our leading competitors of LED devices often talk about the power their LED’s, reinforcing the high optical power levels of their devices as a way to demonstrate competitive advantage over Dermalux – we prefer to focus on what truly matters – the wavelengths and the delivery and accuracy of each one.

The key to successful treatment with light therapy is based on the use of clinically proven and scientifically evidenced wavelengths coupled with optimum power intensity to maximise the light’s reaction with the skin.

When it comes to LED phototherapy, for the wavelength to be the most successful, it needs to match the target chromophore in order to be absorbed and trigger a beneficial cellular response. If insufficient optical energy is applied there will be no or minimal response and in turn, if too much is applied to the skin, then it will it hinder the cellular reaction.

Dermalux® systems use only clinically proven wavelengths delivered at the optimised intensity and dose enabling effective photo biomodulation of targeted cells and skin tissue with proven results.

All Dermalux systems use three clinically proven wavelengths;

o   Blue Light (415nm) – Blemish fighting Blue light destroys the bacteria which causes spots and helps in the prevention of breakouts.

o   Red Light (633nm) – Rejuvenating Red light accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother, firmer skin.

o   NIR Light (830nm) – NIR light triggers the skins anti-inflammatory processes to accelerate repair and reduce irritation and redness.

The Problem with Non-Clinically Proven Wavelengths in an LED

Many leading competitors of Dermalux do not use these same clinically proven wavelengths, thus the effectiveness of the LED and results for clients are compromised or non-existent. Using an LED that offers a peak optimum absorption is imperative to the effectiveness of the wavelength.

Competitors that use alternative wavelengths at varied nanometres such as 465nm or 880nm will not see the same efficiency and quality results of that of a clinically proven wavelength like ours. For example, the 415nm wavelength is clinically proven to be the best wavelength for bacterial and acne destruction and has approximately 10 times more absorption than the 465nm wavelength.

In combination with the use of an incorrect wavelength, if the power of each wavelength isn’t as high as that of a Dermalux system – many clients would have to spend much more time using an LED to receive the same benefits. Alternatively, if a wavelength is too high, it risks causing trauma to the skin.

Through its optimised peak wavelengths and targeted light treatment technology, our Tri-Wave MD offers the gold standard in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) – an essential modality for high-end skin clinics wanting to get effective results for advanced skin conditions and concerns.

The Difference between Phototherapy and Photodynamic Therapy

Phototherapy (aka: light therapy) involves the application of safe and beneficial light to our skin in order to stimulate various cellular processes to produce a therapeutic effect. Dermalux uses the 3 above-mentioned clinically proven wavelengths for skin renewal and repair, to promote collagen and elastin function, reduce inflammation and destroy bacteria.

Photodynamic goes a step further by combining this light energy from these wavelengths with photo sensitising medication to target specific, often pre-cancerous, skin conditions.

What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?

PDT is an advanced phototherapy treatment combining low level light energy with a photo sensitising medication to target damaged or diseased tissue without surgical intervention.

For a PDT reaction to occur it requires the simultaneous presence of a photo sensitising compound (medication), light (clinically-proven wavelengths) and oxygen. As a result, PDT can work to treat advanced skin conditions;

– Actinic Keratosis (Solar)
– Non-hyperkeratotic Keratosis
– Acne Vulgaris and Cystic Acne
– Bowens disease
– Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma
– Superficial Squamous Cell Carcinoma
– Sebaceous Gland Hyperplasia
– Warts
– Photodamage

Additionally, the Dermalux MD LED is also the ONLY LED device that is Medical CE certified and TGA approved to treat Psoriasis, Acne, Wound Healing, Pain Relief and a range of cosmetic indications including rejuvenation, pigmentation and redness.

No other LED device holds this certification, making the Dermalux Flex the clear leader in the portable LED device space.

Why the delivery & accuracy of wavelengths matters

The key to successful treatment with light therapy is the use of clinically proven and scientifically evidenced wavelengths coupled with optimum power intensity to maximise the light’s reaction with the skin.

Dermalux Flex offers the same 3 clinically proven wavelengths as our larger Dermalux® systems; each delivered at the optimised intensity, dose and accuracy to effectively target skin cells to deliver proven results.

All Dermalux systems use three clinically proven wavelengths;

o   Blue Light (415nm) – Blemish fighting Blue light destroys the bacteria which causes spots and helps in the prevention of breakouts.

o   Red Light (633nm) – Rejuvenating Red light accelerates cell renewal and repair, boosting collagen and elastin synthesis for smoother, firmer skin.

o   NIR Light (830nm) – NIR light triggers the skin’s anti-inflammatory processes to accelerate repair and reduce irritation and redness.

Dermalux LED precision wavelength guarantees faster and more effective results for your clients.  For devices using non-clinically proven wavelengths, it poses the issue of achieving little to no results at all or potentially causing trauma in the skin.

The Dermalux Flex has the Largest Optical Power Output Range for a Portable LED Device

The Dermalux Flex also gains its winning edge over competitors through its optical power output range. Whilst most portable LED manufacturers offer an optical power output of between 5-12 J/CM2 (Joules per Square Centimetre), the Dermalux Flex boasts a range of 10-40 J/CM2.

This level of power that the Dermalux Flex offers in combination with its 3 clinically proven wavelengths makes it the superior LED for achieving results within the skin effectively and efficiently.

A Brief History on Light-Emitting Diodes

Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) have been granted hundreds of different jobs and uses in society, from simple improvement of electronic displays on jumbo-sized TVs and lighting, to nurturing the health and wellbeing of your skin. An LED is a light source that emits infrared light (and heat) when activated, and is often administered via single light units or formation of panels that are directed at the skin from as little as a few inches away.

LED at NASA.

LED is a technology that was first utilised by NASA for muscle regeneration and to speed up the healing of wounds as well as relieving discomfort associated with cancer treatments in the early 2000s. But now, it has opened its doors to thousands of more uses. Now surprisingly so, LED – not to be mixed with laser treatments – has been found to have numerous additional, and painless, benefits when different wavelengths of infrared light are exposed to skin. And the big players in the skincare industry have been paying attention.

LED as a Skin Treatment.

Light-emitting diodes are now an increasingly popular additive in the treatment of skin conditions, such as sun damage, and are universally loved due to the treatment being non-invasive and no machine-to-skin contact with the light panels. A combination of these light wavelengths are reported to stimulate collagen synthesis and accelerate fibroblast-myofibroblast transformations that display a composite rejuvenating effect.

LED phototherapy essentially encompasses the application of beneficial light to our skin to stimulate various cellular processes to produce a therapeutic effect, including the appearance of more radiant, rejuvenated and healthier-looking skin.

Biologists recognised, when near-infrared light from LED, that cells exposed grew 150 to 200% faster than cells not stimulated by this light, working to increase energy inside these cells that speed up the healing processes. If this was effective enough for plants grown on the Space Station, why not skin?

Based on this principle that living cells have the ability to absorb, and can be influenced, by light, beneficial light energy from the visible and infrared spectrum work to energise cellular functions, build collagen levels in quantifiable percentages and eventually show a therapeutic result on the skin’s surface.

Benefits of LED on the Skin.

LED lights will not photosensitise the skin and are deemed not carcinogenic. Treatments are pain free, calming and extremely beneficial to the skin.

While we often associate light exposure with negative effects such as skin ageing and damage, LED light also has many positive influences on the body. It helps us produce vitamin D and provides energy and serotonin to the body. It can also accelerate tissue healing. The skin has the ability to absorb light and convert it into energy, meaning it stimulates a higher cell turnover rate, leading to heightened physical results

The differences between positive and negative effects of light are the amount and the parts of the light spectrum we are exposed to. Whilst ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging and bad for your skin over the long term, controlled levels of Red, Blue and Near-Infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial.

Studies have shown that around 90% of light therapy users report an improved skin tone, and enhanced smoothness of the skin in the treatment area.

Dermalux uses evidence-based wavelengths delivered at a skin-enhancing intensity and dose to activate cellular renewal and repair, fuel the manufacture of collagen and elastin, reduce inflammation and destroy acne causing bacteria.

A Guide to LED Phototherapy

Leading edge Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology is increasing in awareness in modern salon society. Using the highest quality standard technology and systems, Dermalux LED phototherapy treatment is determined by delivering key technical parameters that allow for skin specific cellular reactions to occur.

We answer some questions about LED phototherapy and the Dermalux system for those of you who are confused by keen about using this treatment…

What is phototherapy?

LED phototherapy is based on the principle that living cells have the ability to absorb, and can be influenced by light. Phototherapy treatments involve exposing the skin to low levels of beneficial light energy from the visible and infrared part of the light spectrum which work to energise cellular functions to stimulate various cellular processes with therapeutic effects.

What effects does light exposure have?

While we often associate light exposure with negative effects such as skin damage, the right kinds of light has many positive influences on the body. It helps us produce vitamin D and provides energy and serotonin. It can also promote healing, reduce inflammation and pain and prevent tissue damage. Whilst ongoing exposure to UV is very damaging, controlled levels of Red, Blue and Near infrared light are clinically proven to be beneficial.

What wavelengths are involved in phototherapy?

Dermalux systems use only clinically proven wavelengths delivered at the optimised intensity enabling effective photobiomodulation of targeted cells and skin tissue with proven results.

Red 633nm – Naturally stimulates skin rejuvenation and is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy which kick starts the cells to regenerate faster. Red light is absorbs by fibroblasts increasing the synthesis of collagen and elastin for smoother firmer skin.

Blue 415nm – Has powerful antibacterial properties and offers effective treatment for all grades of acne without irritation. Blue light interacts with the bacteria creating a photodynamic reaction which results in bacterial destruction, helping reduce sebum production

Near Infrared 830nm – Works synergistically with Red light for optimum rejuvenation results, and is the most deeply absorbed wavelength targeting inflammatory process cells to accelerate tissue healing and reduce scarring.

What does phototherapy do to your skin?

Dermalux uses these wavelengths to heal and amend your skin, depending on your condition or concern. The LED wavelengths can increase collagen and elastin synthesis, reduce fine lines, improve complexion, stimulate circulation, restore radiance, reduce congesting and acne prone skin, regulate natural oil production, strengthen damaged capillaries, relieve pain and redness, and work as an advanced regenerating and healing treatment.
